Stem Cuttings

In 1987 I purchased a dark field microscope. With this I fulfilled a long held wish. Now I wanted to see whether the world of the minute - not normally accessible to the human eye - if it is possible to find pictures of nature with a meaningful expression.

To learn to handle the microscope correctly as quickly as possible, I took a course at the Kosmos Publishing House and was surprised how many things can be examined under the micrsoscope. It was an exciting time and soon I knew what I wanted to look for. It had begun with the making of beautifully coloured stem cuttings. I started to take photo‘s with a Minolta reflex camera of parts that attracted my attention.

STEM CUTTINGS

The expressive capability of these pictures was of another kind.

The same plant species produced similar pictures, and related species showed a variation of the basic nature.

The picture emerges through a sequence of slices through the stem of the plant. In the little canals of the up- and downflowing watery juices the basic pattern of the plant appears.

According to the same principle little slices of glass were produced in Murano for the making of Venetian jewellery.
